The One Fix That Simply Works

Welcome to the very first edition of Sunday Tech Tips!

As we gear up for the official launch of Clearly Fixed this Monday, December 8th, we want to start you off with the single most effective troubleshooting step out there.

Sunday Tech Tip : The Magic of “Turning It Off and On Again”

It is the cliché we have all come to know: “Have you tried turning it off and on again?”

While it might sound mundane, a simple restart is actually a vital maintenance habit for your smart devices and computers. Here is why it works, and why it is so important.

Your device has a limited amount of RAM (Random Access Memory). Think of RAM as your device’s “short-term memory.” As you open apps, browse the web, and listen to music, that short-term memory gets filled up with fragments of old data and background processes that didn’t close properly.

Over time, this “digital clutter” causes:

  • Sluggish performance
  • Apps crashing or freezing
  • Battery drain
  • Connectivity glitches

A lot of this stems from the fact that your device is trying to execute commands billions of times every second. It is like trying to push through a busy street: the more clutter that builds up, the harder that movement becomes.

When you restart your device, all this clutter disappears. It forces all running processes to stop and start fresh, clearing out the errors that accumulated over the week and wiping that short-term memory clean.

At Clearly Fixed, we recommend a restart once a week. You don’t need to wait until your phone freezes to do it!

  • For Smartphones: Sunday night is a great time to power your phone completely down and then turn it back on. It sets your device up for a smooth week ahead.
  • For Laptops/Desktops: If you usually just close the lid (Sleep Mode) or leave it running, make a habit of doing a full “Shut Down” or “Restart” once a week to let updates install and the system refresh. Sleep mode is just like putting your car in idle; it’s not a great idea to keep it there for months on end.

When a Restart Isn’t Enough

While a reboot fixes software glitches, it can’t fix a cracked screen, a failing battery, or a virus. If you have tried turning it off and on again and the problem is still there, it’s time to reach out to us.

Clearly Fixed officially opens tomorrow, Monday, December 8th!

Whether you are here in Springfield, VA, or need to mail in a device from across the country, we are ready to help.

Have a great week, and happy computing!
